Mechanical Tissue Ablation with Focused Ultrasound

Noninvasive Surgery Method Using Nonlinear Ultrasound Pulses

Videos: Boiling Histotripsy for Focal Therapy in Prostate

A collaborative team at APL-UW's Center for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound, with UW researchers and high-intensity focused ultrasound experts at Moscow State University are developing a technology to improve ultrasound treatment of prostate tumors. The team has built a prototype device to perform pre-clinical feasibility studies. It uses boiling histotripsy to mechanically liquefy tissue at the ultrasound focus rather than thermally ablating it.

Boiling Histotripsy
Clinical Applications

Our method has important advantages over thermal high intensity focused ultrasound treatments. We can control lesion location and size precisely and spare critical structures such as blood vessels.

In terms of clinical applications, the range is quite broad. It basically can be applied to any treatment that requires any form of tissue ablation.

Presentations
