Dr. Warren Fox first joined the Laboratory as an Electrical Engineering in 1988. He then received an APL-UW Fellowship to complete his graduate studies at UW. His main technical interests have been focused in signal processing and underwater acoustics, leading to expertise in sonar systems and their integration with autonomous underwater vehicles.

He has purused research opportunities at NATO's SACLANT Undersea Research Centre in Italy, the Office of Naval Research, and at BlueView Technologies, a company spun off from imaging sonar technologies developed at APL-UW. Since his full-time return to the Laboratory in 2018 he contributed technically and programmatically to many projects, was head of a research department, and served as Deputy Executive Director until accepting the position of Executive Director in 2024.

The Laboratory works with UW’s CoMotion to bring our entrepreneurial researchers together with industry and to accelerate and broaden the impact of their innovations.

Land Acknowledgment

The Laboratory stands and conducts research on the lands and waterways of the Coast Salish Peoples, whose ancestors resided here since time immemorial. Many Indigenous peoples thrive in this place — alive and strong.

Since 1943, APL-UW has conducted acoustic and oceanographic studies in how deep ocean variability affects Navy systems. Today, our scientists and engineers pursue leadership roles in acoustic and remote sensing, ocean physics and engineering, medical and industrial ultrasound, polar science and logistics, environmental and information systems, and electronic and photonic systems.

APL-UW research is conducted in four campus buildings: the original Henderson Hall, the (Old) Oceanography Building, the Portage Bay Building, and the Benjamin Hall Interdisciplinary Research Building. Our research vessels are piered on Lake Union.

Research at APL-UW is funded by grants and contracts, primarily with government federal agencies such as the U.S. Navy, NSF, NASA, NIH, and DARPA.

APL-UW receives no support from the state of Washington. The Laboratory relies on private gifts for new faculty positions, new buildings, student fellowships, seed funding for new research projects, endowments, matching funds to secure federal research grants, educational outreach to schools, undergraduate mentorships, and new programs.
